With boats in the slips and people moving through the area, this project required steady coordination and a thoughtful approach from start to finish.
A Waterfront Setting with Real-World Constraints
Working beside a marina in Grand Haven always brings a mix of beauty and complexity. This roadway sits between mature trees, open public spaces, and low-profile waterfront buildings that draw steady foot traffic.
The existing pavement showed visible wear and fading.
Still, it retained enough structural integrity for an asphalt overlay, which allowed us to refresh the surface without removing the original pavement.
Tight access points guided our staging plan.
We needed to move a paving machine, a dump truck, and compaction equipment through areas with active visitors. Our team monitored every movement so the work stayed safe and the marina continued operating smoothly.
How We Approached the Overlay
We began by cleaning the surface and preparing the aged pavement to accept the new layer. Once the paving machine was positioned, our dump truck fed hot mix asphalt into the hopper. The fresh material flowed evenly as our operator laid the new surface.
Team members followed with compactors, shaping and tightening the layer so the finished roadway would settle evenly through the seasonal changes that come with life near Lake Michigan.
Every pass required slow, steady control.
Waterfront sites often experience soft soil zones and shifting moisture levels. Even though this access road was paved, we kept those environmental factors in mind during compaction.
The goal was a uniform layer that bonded cleanly to the older pavement while delivering the smooth texture the client expected.
Results that Fit the Marina Environment
When the final roller made its last pass, the roadway looked transformed.
The surface had a deep, dark finish that immediately elevated the appearance of the surrounding buildings and open spaces. Vehicles now travel over a smooth, consistent surface that guides drivers through the marina safely and comfortably.
The overlay tied neatly into the boundaries of the existing pavement.
This allowed the refreshed section to blend with adjoining areas without abrupt edges or height differences. For a location known for tourism, boating, and outdoor recreation, the improvement supports both aesthetics and functionality.
Local Insight that Shaped the Work
Grand Haven’s weather patterns include freeze-thaw cycles, lake effect moisture, and heavy summer traffic. Those conditions influenced our mix selection, compaction approach, and timing of the project. A tight working window near the water requires a crew that understands how to move efficiently while respecting the public setting.
That element guided our decisions every step of the way.
